Something to Read

Effloresce is here! Effloresece is a journal produced by EWLI, the Emerging Women’s Leadership Initiative. Spreaheaded by Holly Rankin Zaher, this grant-funded collection of essays, poetry, and visual art features a plethora of femal practitioners who are carving out thier own unique paths in the emerging church and beyond. I especially liked the vibrant artwork of Blair Davenport-Anderson, and it was nice to “hear” from far flung collegues like Kelly Bean, Nanette Sawyer, and Debbie Blue (who I once heard give a kick ass sermon on the phallic nature of the Tower of Babel and the womblike nature of the Ark. You know how there are people who talk about a new kind of Christianity, and then there are people who actually are a new kind of Christian? Or how some people write books about postmodern faith and some people live it? (Not that they are always mutually exclusive, but there is kind of a trend there.) Kevin Rains is one of the latter – a top notch practitioner of neo-monasticism and part of the first wave of folks to explore alternative pastoring in the late nineties and early 2000’s. Mind Flailing on the 4th of July

We’re having a party. Actually, I’m reluctant to call it a party ‘cuz that implies that I will actually be hosting something, when really I’m just sitting around drinking beer. The thing is, we live three blocks from the biggest fireworks show in the city. If we ever decide not to have a party we’ll have to board up all the windows and leave town. Even then people would probably show up just to sit on the lawn and see the view. Right now I can see a huge barge sitting out in Lake Union, stuffed full of top-shelf pyrotechnics.
