Ramadan Day Two
I have been “fasting” an hour a day for Ramadan. I spend my newfound hour honoring the word, and expressing thanksgiving for it’s revelation. It’s a long way from what my friend-of-a-friend Andy describes as “the Christian who bows down to the Muslim’s feet, the Muslim who bows down to the Christian’s feet,” but it’s a start.
I took a trip recently, and that made it hard to keep up with the collage work. (Too many supplies to carry with me.) I’m determined to keep on keeping on until I hit 30 pieces, even if it’s not 30 days. Muslims often add a day to thier 30 day fast if they must break fast one day. I’m happy to have the discipline, and grateful to my Muslim siblings for giving it to me.
Unable to choose verses on my own, I’m following the lectionary. The passage for my second day was from Job 42. The part the rose up to me during lectio divina was this:
God said to Job, “Listen now and I will speak. I will question you and you will give the answers.”
My response in the oratio stage was this:
“Listen now”…don’t babble on. I admitt it, I was the one. I was the one who babbled on about things far beyond me — made small talk about wonders over my head. There is a difference between spinning ideas, generating brainstorms — and just plain being pompous. It’s fine line, a slight difference — but there nonetheless. I leave soon for Washington D.C., to speak to and with people about living incarnationally. I want to translate our experience at Monkfish Abbey. I want to translate well. I would really like to hear the questions the participants are asking. May I have — and give–the gift of listening. MayI both hear and know. May I not babble on.
