Intercession for the Gulf Coast: Prayer Flags

Last Thursday night we made prayer flags for the people impacted by Hurricane Katrina. I had invited a bunch of neighbors and friends at the last minute, but it ended up being just we monkfishy folks. Most of the tribe was pretty engaged with the project, including the kids. These are the results. Paul and Josh hung them up yesterday. I smile — and remember to pray — everytime I see them out the window.
This one is Paul’s and I’m really proud him for making it. I think the words are beautiful.

This is what we hung up on the telephone pole for the folks who walk by thinking “what the…??!?!”
These flags were made by the members, friends, and neighbors of
Monkfish Abbey, a funky little spiritual growth group in Wallingford.
They express our hopes, prayers, and wishes for the people of the
Gulf Coast as they struggle to find their footing in the wake of
Hurricane Katrina.
If you’d like to make a flag, step on up. Supplies are available on the front porch. Yep, seriously. It’s the red and green house — 3509 Densmore. Paul, Rachelle, Sharon, and Kristen live there, so if a grown-up talks to you it will be one of them and they’ll be real nice.
If you’re scratching your head and wondering about Monkfish Abbey, stop on by. We meet Thursdays at 7pm right here in the Densmore House. Or email rachelle at urbanabbess@monkfish-abbey.org.
Thanks for praying/hoping/wishing with us.

those are so beautiful. i want to make one, too. i’d be so curious to know if any of your neighbors or anyone passing thru stops to ask about them or make one of their own.
How wonderful is this. Great work with those flags. I have a similar flag haning in our living room…It’s a prayer for peace over Malawi that I pray many times for many nations of the world. Well done.
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing these.
These are SO cool!
[…] Because embodying emotional and spiritual thoughts into physical symbol is so powerful to me, Jena suggested that I find some way to physically represent my values. She mentioned that she’s always wanted someone to make a mobile of their values so they could see how they move in and out amongst one another. That wasn’t something I could engineer, but it did make me think of those collapsing water cups we used as kids – the type that were made of concentric plastic rings that collapsed down inside the lid of the cup for compact travel. Remember those? (I had an orange one that I kept by the sink as my tooth mug.) I decided to try to make one of those…which turned into a mobile…which looks suspiciously like the color scheme from Oh the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss…which I figure is all pretty much prophetic, don’t you think?
