    Substitutionary atonement is one way people tried to understand and redeem Jesus’ presence in the world, and the horrendous experience of crucifixion. To me it does neither. It is a hideous theology, and points to a neurotic centre in Christianity’s heart. We should all be very, very uncomfortable with that theology…
