Wisdom from the West Wing
Senator: ” Do you believe the Bible is literally true?”
Tobey: “Yes I do. I just don’t think either one of us is smart enough to understand it.”

I totally concur. And thanks for the encouragement. It helps to know what I am attempting has been accomplished before.
The Bible doesn’t have to be literally true–as long as it is pointing to some Thing that IS true (and in my view, it does just that; check out Frederick Buechner’s Wishful Thinking, a Theological ABC).
It’s actually better if the Bible isn’t literally true, doesn’t cover everything, because then there is room for God to get in through the cracks in our thinking and prejudices. And for us to experience God for ourselves, not through a printed page.
Peter,
I don’t think something has to be literally true to be truth- bearing. I just though this was a nice piece of dialogue. I love the West Wing. It’s my favorite show. I think Bradley Whitfield (Josh Lyman) wrote this episode. It had some real zingers…
