Hump Day

Are you bored yet? For anyone who’s new to the blog, this isn’t my normal style. I just thought it would be interesting (to me at least) to document on week “captian’s log” style. Here’s yesterday.

Wednesday

• Up half the night with stomache and sore throat. Bail on 6am walk (phew! Walking partner didn’t go either.) Get up and get everyone ready. Put buffalo potroast in crock pot w/salsa. (Husband purchased 1/3 of a buffalo on-line last year. This was the last of it.)

• Remember it’s your week to drop younger child off at after-preschool playdate!! (Wahoo! Six hours in a row to yourself!)

• Remember you’ve promised elder child to use preschool/playdate “free” time in order to stay at school with said elder child. (Mourn having to skip yoga class. V. important “up” time.)

• Take children to school. Drop elder child off. Drop younger child and carpool child at preschool. Return to elder child’s school to spend day in classroom. (Elder child has been unexpectedly crying re: school. Must observe classroom/make nice with teacher … who doesn’t like having parents in classroom.)

• Spend 5 hours in elder daughter’s first grade classroom. Notice that teacher is maxed out. Discover that teacher’s husband is undergoing chemo(?). Celebrate that friend from last year is in top reading class – even though no one else in home speaks English. (Way to go Jen!) Elder child does not cry ALL DAY!!

• Do regular after school stuff. Make sure elder child (1st grad) does homework. Add veggies to pot roast in crock pot. Make brownies with kiddos. Read for 20 minutes while children draw cats with green eyes. Vacuum. Let younger child have Lysol wipes to “clean” the bathroom. Younger child is overjoyed.

• Meet with lovely friends-and-mentors, Rich and Rose Swetmen re: moving ThPM from Seattle Vineyard to the Vineyard Community Church. They bring wine, champagne, and flowers. We love Rich and Rose!

• Wonderful husband remembers to tape America’s Next Top Model (completely guilty pleasure), West Wing (season premier … please let the writing be better this year!). Oops…actually Top Model doesn’t record. Probably for the best…

• Stay up talking with Paul about Eden’s class and how we can best advocate for Eden, for the teacher, and for the other children in the classroom. Realize that it’s midnight and there no way to make my 6am walking date. Read for ½ hour to calm mind. (Doomsday Book – good scifi.) Sleep.

Doomsday Book is a favorite of mine. I don’t know if you’ve read any of Connie Willis’s other books, but I recommend ‘em. To Say Nothing Of The Dog is hilariously funny and way too hard to put down — I stayed up all night reading it the first time. Passage is, I think, her best novel yet: intricate, serious, funny, and rewarding. (Oh, and don’t miss her short-story collections either.)

Short stories to novels, serious to screwball: there aren’t many writers with that kind of range.
